Eating disorders
Overweight or underweight caused by eating disorder is a multifactor problem of modern medicine. The prevalence of this disorder in the age between 14 and 24 years is quite high, especially in girls and young women.
Anorexia nervosa is a third among the most common health disorders of American people. Bulimia nervosa in young women is diagnosed twice as much as anorexia nervosa.
Eating disorders are the most complicated disorders in the diagnosis and treatment. Timely diagnosis and choosing a treatment is a prerogative of general practitioners (GP).
The new point of view on the problem and correct diagnosis contribute to a shorter duration of the disease. While special drugs reduce the risk of complications and psychosocial consequences.
Unfortunately, in most countries of the world the level of medical service is quite low. The lack of professional doctors is often the reason of late diagnosis of eating disorder and hence the development of comorbidities.
The World Health Organization recommends using some advanced methods to diagnose and treat eating disorders. The new methods of classification of mental and behavioral disorders reflect the specifications of different mental disorders more fully.
To diagnose and monitor a patient’s state further, the following laboratory and instrumental research methods should be used:
  • Physical examination – measuring height, age, BMI, salivary gland enlargement, brittle nails etc.
  • Basic tests – blood test, urine test, thyroid function, estrogen test (in women) and testosterone test (in men).
  • Brain scanning and consultation of related professionals.
When working with patients, suffering from eating disorders, a doctor should establish a stable therapeutic relationship. A trustworthy information and a patient’s sincerity help to adjust an optimal treatment and reduce the risk of complications.
